Wheels for flat glass processing  manufacturing

 

Depending wheels types we can consider different manufacturing ways.

 

There are mainly 4 different wheels for flat glass polishing.

 

1/Diamond tools

2/Polishing tools with rubber bonds.

3/Stone wheels

4/White or cerium wheels.

 

1/Diamond wheels

The active part of the wheel is a bond (generally metallic or resin type) where are located the diamond.  

Every wheels supplier manufactures his own bond. It is a very secret part of the manufacturing.

The glass edging is made by diamond particles located on the bond surface of the wheels. But these diamond particles are not eternal and they break into contact with the glass. To be efficient  the wheel must have new diamond particles appearing  on the surface of the bond. The bond must therefore fix both the diamond particles to wear but also let appear constantly new diamond particles .

Each manufacturer has a wide range of bonds he will use depending on the type of grinding wheel the machine used , the characteristics of the grinding wheel or tool ( roughing, finishing , strawberry ... ).

The wheels manufacturer chooses the diamond with certain characteristics.

- The shape of the grains

-The diamond grit siza

- The diamond concentration inside the bond .

 

The following concentrations are generally the most used.

The bigger is the grit size more the wheels can remove glass. But with a not very beautiful surface condition.

All the knowledge for the wheels manufacturer is to choose the right grit sizes depending the machine, how many wheels have the machine.. And to choose the right bond. And to have a good balance between the different grit sizes of a set of wheels.

 

Once the bond decided it is possible to start to manufacture the active part of the wheels. It is done in specific molds. The mold with the bond powder is installed inside furnace where a high temperature and high pressure is required.

The temperature and the pressure are, here again, manufacturing secrets.

This active part (in case of the wheels it is a crown) is fixed on a metallic crown and after on a plate. This plate will allow to fix the wheel on the processing machine.

The wheel is adjusted, balanced (very important) and cleaned with sandblasting.
